Our School
St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School is a Voluntary Aided school within the Diocese of Hallam. It is situated on Chancet Wood Drive, near to Meadowhead. There are 215 children on roll and we have a 10 place LA funded Integrated Resource for children with physical and complex medical difficulties. We provide an excellent, balanced education for all children between the ages of 4 and 11.
The school is well-maintained and set in attractive and extensive grounds, including playing fields, woodland, gardens and two large playgrounds. There is a newly planted orchard of fruit trees and a well-developed garden for growing. We use the outdoor environment regularly as part of the curriculum, for example, by learning maths through creating bird hides, feeders and tables and monitoring the activity.
History of the School
There had been talks for 40 years and negotiations dragged on for 12 years before the building of the School became a reality and opened on 5th January 1971. It was originally for 280 children from 5-11 year olds. The School was bought by the Parish at a cost of £77,000. It was built to cover the whole of Sheffield postal district 8 plus all Totley, Dore , Norton, Batemoor and Jordanthorpe.
